note from the
"Kingdom of Morocco"
.
In March of 1956 the protectorate of
“French Morocco”
was ended and Morocco regained its independence from France as the
"Kingdom of Morocco"
. Sultan Mohammed V became King in 1957 and ruled until his death. His son Hassan II became King in March of 1961. He died in 1999 and his son Mohammad VI is now King.
This note is dated 1970 and

"in the year of the Hijra"
1390 which began on March 9, 1970. This design was only issued in 1970 and 1985.

Morocco was important during World War II. The first American troops to fight in the European theater landed there on November 8, 1942 and had to subdue the
"Vichy"
French. Many lives were lost on both sides. This was necessary because the ports were outside the Mediterranean and could not easily be blocked or attacked by the enemy. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill held a very important meeting there, where
"Unconditional Surrender"
was announced as an allied war aim.
Still, Morocco may best be remembered as the location of both
"Casablanca"
and
"Marrakesh".
