Pinback for Adlai Stevenson III's campaign for U.S. Senate from Illinois, probably his first in 1970.
Stevenson (1930-2021) was the son of former Illinois Gov. Adlai Stevenson II, who lost presidential elections in 1952 and 1956 to Dwight D. Eisenhower. Adlai III is also the great-grandson of Adlai Stevenson I, who served as U.S. vice president under President Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897.
A former state representative and state treasurer, Adlai III was elected senator in 1970 in a special election to complete the unexpired term of the late Republican Sen. Everett McKinley Dirksen. Stevenson III left the Senate in 1981 to run for Illinois governor, losing in 1982 and 1986 to Republican Gov. James R. Thompson.
